Jo was the oldest of three children born to Q.B. Armstrong and Annie Velma (Henry) Armstrong. Born in Clovis, New Mexico, in 1934, her adolescent years were spent moving between Clovis, New Mexico, and St. Louis, Missouri, where her younger sister Billie received extensive treatment and therapy for polio. She graduated from Clovis High School in 1952, then attended Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) in Portales, NM. There she met Fred Stockdale, Jr., another ENMU freshman, and they were married in January of 1953. Their first son Steve was born in 1954, followed by Michael Frederick (Freddy) in 1957 and Elizabeth Ann (Lizann) in 1960. She died at the end of 1996 after a long battle with scleroderma and Raynaud's disease. Please read a tribute to her that I wrote right after she died. Please check back soon for more.
